Capillary-supporting saponin
Escin
Products with Escin
Escin is the principal saponin of the horse chestnut seed — the same glossy conker children collect in autumn. It is unusual among botanical actives in having a genuinely deep evidence base, albeit one built largely on oral use: horse chestnut seed extract is among the best-studied plant medicines for chronic venous insufficiency, the condition of leaky, under-performing leg veins.
How it works
The research points to two connected actions. Escin reduces the permeability of small blood vessels — less fluid leaks out of capillaries into surrounding tissue — and it improves venous tone, the slight tension in vessel walls that keeps blood moving rather than pooling. Both actions come from its interaction with the endothelial cells lining the vessels.
In skincare
Topically, those same properties are the reason escin appears in three places: products for redness-prone and couperose skin, where fragile surface capillaries run too close to the surface; eye creams, where reduced capillary leakage translates to less morning puffiness and less of the dark tint that shows through thin under-eye skin; and post-procedure formulas.
It typically arrives as part of a vascular bench — alongside butcher’s broom, sweet clover, bilberry and citrus flavonoids like hesperidin, which work on overlapping mechanisms.
Worth knowing
A cream can support the look of redness-prone skin, but visible surface vessels themselves are a structural matter — persistent ones are treated in clinic, not from a jar. Topical escin is well tolerated; occasional sensitivity is possible, so patch test.
