Postbiotic barrier support
Lactobacillus Ferment Lysate
Products with Lactobacillus Ferment Lysate
A lysate is what remains when cultured Lactobacillus — the same genus of bacteria behind yoghurt and sauerkraut — is grown, then broken apart and filtered. No living organisms reach the jar; what the skin receives is the bacteria’s dismantled components: cell-wall fragments, peptides and metabolites. In current terminology this makes it a postbiotic rather than a probiotic, and the distinction matters — a cosmetic cream cannot keep bacteria alive, but it can deliver their molecules.
How it works
The skin’s surface carries pattern-recognition receptors — sensors that read microbial fragments and adjust the skin’s behaviour in response. Research on lactobacillus lysates has associated topical use with strengthened barrier function, increased production of the skin’s own antimicrobial peptides, and a calmer response to irritation. In effect, the fragments signal a friendly microbial presence, and the skin answers by reinforcing itself.
There is also indirect support for the resident microbiome: a better-functioning barrier with balanced surface conditions is the environment in which a healthy microbial community maintains itself.
In formulation
Appears in barrier and sensitive-skin products, usually high in the ingredient list because the filtrate is water-based. It is non-exfoliating, non-photosensitising and well tolerated; effects on redness and reactivity in published work build over weeks of consistent use.
What to expect
This is a signalling ingredient, not an instant fix — the research points to gradual improvement in how easily skin is provoked, not an overnight change.
