Acetyl zingerone is a lab-refined derivative of zingerone, one of the pungent compounds in ginger — redesigned specifically for skin, where the natural molecule is too unstable to be useful. It is one of the more interesting antioxidants to emerge from recent cosmetic chemistry, with its own small but genuine clinical literature.

How it works

Most antioxidants do one job; acetyl zingerone was engineered to do several. It quenches reactive oxygen species directly, chelates the iron and copper ions that catalyse new radical formation — a step most antioxidants skip — and absorbs some energy in the blue-light range. Published work has also associated it with supporting the skin’s own matrix maintenance, including a double-blind study showing improvement in wrinkle appearance over eight weeks of use.

The stabiliser role

Its chelating talent makes it a formulation bodyguard: paired with vitamin C it mops up the metal ions that would otherwise degrade the vitamin, extending the working life of C serums — which is why the two increasingly travel together.

In formulation

Appears in antioxidant serums and after-sun formulas, typically at one percent or below. Non-irritating, non-photosensitising, suitable in pregnancy, and stable where its parent molecule is not.
