Exosomes are tiny membrane bubbles that cells bud off to send parcels of signals — proteins, lipids, genetic fragments — to other cells. Biology uses them as a postal service; skincare has adopted the word with enthusiasm, and it pays to read the fine print on which exosomes a product actually contains.

The kinds that exist

Human stem-cell exosomes belong to clinical research and regulated in-clinic settings. What cosmetics use are plant- or microbe-derived vesicles — here, vesicles budded from lactobacillus, the fermentation workhorse. They are genuine extracellular vesicles, from a bacterium rather than a human cell.

What the bacterial version plausibly does

A lactobacillus vesicle is effectively a concentrated, membrane-wrapped postbiotic: the same cell-wall fragments and metabolites that give ferment lysates their barrier-supporting, calm-signalling reputation, packaged for better surface delivery. Early research on microbial vesicles in skincare points toward soothing and barrier support — a refinement of the postbiotic story, not a stem-cell therapy.

In formulation

Appears in regeneration-positioned serums, usually alongside ferments, peptides or nucleotides. Well tolerated, non-photosensitising, suitable in pregnancy.

Worth knowing

Marketing seldom distinguishes vesicle sources; ingredient lists do. Exosome-based professional treatments are a clinician conversation — the cosmetic version conditions the surface between visits.
