Hexylresorcinol

INCI name Hexylresorcinol
Function Brightening agent (Tyrosinase inhibitor)
Pregnancy Speak to your doctor
UV sensitivity Not photosensitising

A resorcinol derivative used in brightening formulations, with a history in medicine as an antiseptic before skincare adopted it for tone.

How it works

Research associates hexylresorcinol with inhibition of tyrosinase, the enzyme that catalyses melanin production, and comparative studies have positioned it as one of the better-tolerated non-hydroquinone brightening agents. It also carries antioxidant activity.

Tolerability

Generally well tolerated at cosmetic levels; mild transient warmth on application is occasionally reported.

Pregnancy and breastfeeding

Specific evidence in pregnancy is limited; the conventional advice for targeted brightening actives is to check with your doctor.
