Physical exfoliant
Magnesium Oxide
Products with Magnesium Oxide
Magnesium oxide is a simple inorganic mineral compound, used in skincare as a physical exfoliating particle and occasionally as an absorbent or a mild alkalising agent.
How it exfoliates
Purely mechanically. The crystals are harder than the outermost skin cells, so massaging them across the surface dislodges loose corneocytes. There is no chemical action and no effect on the bonds between cells, which is what separates physical from chemical exfoliation.
One practical consequence: because nothing is altered chemically, physical exfoliants do not increase UV sensitivity the way alpha and beta hydroxy acids do.
Particle shape matters
This is the thing worth understanding about any physical exfoliant.
Magnesium oxide crystals are angular rather than spherical. Angular particles abrade more effectively than round ones, and they are correspondingly less forgiving of heavy pressure. Spherical exfoliants such as jojoba esters roll across the surface; angular ones cut across it.
Neither is inherently better. Angular particles do more with less product; spherical particles tolerate poor technique. Milling determines the size, and finer grades are gentler than coarse ones regardless of shape.
Why it rinses cleanly
Magnesium oxide reacts with water to form magnesium hydroxide, which is sparingly soluble. So the particles break down and rinse away rather than persisting in wastewater. This is the meaningful environmental contrast with polyethylene microbeads, which do not.
Alkalinity
Magnesium oxide is alkaline. Skin sits naturally around pH 5 and functions best there, so in principle an alkaline material is not what you want on it.
In a rinse-off product with under a minute of contact, this is a minor consideration rather than a problem. It is one more reason not to leave a physical exfoliant on the skin longer than necessary.
The magnesium question
Products containing magnesium compounds sometimes carry claims about magnesium's role in cellular function. Magnesium is genuinely essential to hundreds of enzymatic processes in the body.
Whether magnesium oxide applied topically and rinsed off delivers meaningful magnesium into skin is a separate question, and the evidence is thin. In an exfoliant, its role is the crystal, not the mineral.
