Mineral humectant
Copper PCA
Products with Copper PCA
Copper PCA is two useful things fused into one salt: copper, the trace mineral, bound to PCA — pyrrolidone carboxylic acid, which is not an exfoliating acid but one of the main components of the skin’s own Natural Moisturising Factor.
The copper half
Skin uses copper as the working centre of several of its most important enzymes: lysyl oxidase, which crosslinks new collagen and elastin into functional fibres — the reason copper keeps company with the word “firming” — and superoxide dismutase, one of the body’s frontline antioxidant enzymes. Copper also has intrinsic antimicrobial activity, which is why copper surfaces and dressings appear in medical settings. A topical copper salt keeps the surface supplied with the mineral these systems draw on.
The PCA half
PCA is what much of your skin’s built-in moisture retention is actually made of — the humectant fraction of the Natural Moisturising Factor. Supplying it topically is about as literal as “like attracts like” gets in skincare: it binds water at the surface the same way the skin’s own PCA does.
In formulation
Appears in mists, toners and serums, often alongside fermented copper forms and distinct from copper peptides (GHK-Cu), which are signalling molecules rather than mineral-humectant salts. Well tolerated, non-photosensitising, and lends formulas a characteristic blue-green cast — copper’s own colour.
What to expect
Surface hydration immediately; the enzymatic-support story is a slow, background contribution rather than a visible-in-a-week effect.
