Regenerative signal peptide
Copper Tripeptide-1 (GHK-Cu)
INCI name
Copper Tripeptide-1
Function
Regenerative signal peptide
Pregnancy
Suitable
UV sensitivity
Not photosensitising
A naturally occurring complex of the tripeptide GHK with a copper ion — one of the most-studied peptides in skincare, first identified in human plasma.
How it works
GHK-Cu declines in skin with age. Research associates the topical peptide with signalling roles in tissue remodelling: markers of collagen and glycosaminoglycan production, and support for the skin’s repair processes. The copper it carries is also a cofactor for antioxidant enzymes.
Where it fits
Barrier-repair and recovery formulations, where its repair-signalling associations complement replacement lipids like ceramides.
Tolerability
Well tolerated; conventionally kept apart from strong direct acids in the same application, which can destabilise the copper complex.
Pregnancy and breastfeeding
No established concerns at topical cosmetic levels; conventionally considered suitable.
