Honey has one of the longest continuous records of any skin ingredient — wound dressings in ancient Egypt, medical-grade honey in modern hospitals — and unusually for a folk remedy, the modern evidence largely backs the folklore.

How it works

Chemically, honey is a supersaturated sugar solution, and that concentration is the mechanism. As a humectant it binds water aggressively to the skin surface. As an antimicrobial it works osmotically — the sugar concentration draws water out of microbial cells — reinforced by trace hydrogen peroxide generated by the bee enzyme glucose oxidase, and in some honeys by additional plant-derived compounds. Its mild acidity sits close to skin’s own.

In hospital settings, medical-grade honey remains a legitimate wound-care tool; cosmetic honey borrows the gentler end of the same chemistry for cleansing, masks and soothing formulas.

The bee trio

Honey often travels with its hive-mates: royal jelly (the protein-rich secretion fed to queen larvae, used cosmetically as a nutrient-dense conditioner) and propolis (the resin bees seal the hive with, antimicrobial but also a recognised contact allergen — the trio’s main caution).

Worth knowing

Anyone with a bee-product allergy should avoid honey, royal jelly and especially propolis on skin; patch testing is sensible for the allergy-prone. Otherwise tolerance is excellent, and honey-based formulas are among the most comfortable in the cleansing category.
