Skin-conditioning sugar

Rhamnose

INCI name Rhamnose
Function Skin-conditioning sugar
Pregnancy Suitable
UV sensitivity Not photosensitising

A plant-derived sugar, usually appearing alongside glucose and glucuronic acid as a sugar complex.

How it works

Research associates rhamnose with binding to receptors at the skin’s dermal-epidermal junction and with support for markers of skin renewal — one of the few simple sugars studied for activity beyond humectancy. In cleansers and creams the complex also conditions the skin surface and supports its microbiome environment.

Tolerability

Extremely well tolerated across all skin types.

Pregnancy and breastfeeding

No concerns are associated with topical use; conventionally considered suitable.
