Rice bran is the outer layer removed during the milling of white rice. It contains most of the grain's nutritional and antioxidant content, which is why it is a byproduct with genuine value rather than waste.

The active constituents

Several groups, and they work differently.

Gamma-oryzanol is a mixture of ferulic acid esters found almost exclusively in rice bran. It is a potent antioxidant and absorbs in the UV range, which is why it appears in sun care formulations as a supporting ingredient.

Ferulic acid is a phenolic antioxidant, best known in skincare for stabilising vitamins C and E and extending their activity in formulation.

Tocotrienols are a form of vitamin E distinct from the more common tocopherols, with a different molecular structure and, in some research, greater antioxidant potency.

Phytic acid is also present, chelating metal ions that would otherwise catalyse oxidation reactions.

Why the combination matters

Antioxidants tend to work better in networks than alone, because they operate in different compartments and regenerate one another after oxidation. Rice bran supplies several at once from a single ingredient, which is part of its appeal to formulators.

Rice bran extract versus rice bran oil

Worth distinguishing. Rice bran oil is a lipid, used as an emollient and rich in oleic and linoleic acid. Rice bran extract is generally a water or solvent extraction capturing the polyphenol and antioxidant fraction rather than the oil.

They share a source and do different jobs.

The usual botanical caveat

The INCI name tells you the plant and the part used. It does not tell you the extraction method or the concentration of gamma-oryzanol, ferulic acid or anything else. These vary substantially between suppliers.

Rice allergy

Uncommon but documented. Anyone with a known rice allergy should approach with caution.
