Silk Tree Extract

Albizia julibrissin is the Persian silk tree, used in traditional Chinese medicine where the bark is known as He Huan Pi. In cosmetics it appears almost exclusively in eye products, and for a specific reason.

Glycation, which is the mechanism

Glycation is a reaction in which sugars bind to proteins without enzymatic control, forming advanced glycation end products, usually abbreviated AGEs.

When this happens to collagen and elastin, the fibres become cross-linked and stiffer, losing the flexibility that lets skin recover its shape. AGEs also have a yellow-brown colour, which contributes to sallowness and to the yellowish cast some under-eye discolouration has.

Glycation accumulates over decades and the cross-links are not readily reversed, so prevention is the realistic framing rather than repair.

What the extract is proposed to do

Albizia extract is studied for two related effects: interfering with the formation of new AGEs, and supporting the removal of glycated proteins already present.

That second part is what distinguishes it from most anti-glycation ingredients, which act only preventively.

Why eye products specifically

Under-eye discolouration has several causes: vascular congestion showing through thin skin, melanin, and structural changes. Glycation contributes to the last two, through the colour of AGEs themselves and through the loss of tissue resilience.

Formulations targeting dark circles frequently combine ingredients addressing each cause, and albizia covers a route that caffeine and tyrosinase inhibitors do not.

The evidence

Research comes largely from the ingredient supplier, and the concept of topical anti-glycation is less established than antioxidant or retinoid science.

The underlying biology of glycation is well documented, including in diabetes research where it has been studied extensively. Whether a topical botanical meaningfully affects it in skin is the less settled part.

The usual botanical caveat

The INCI name tells you the plant and the part used. It does not tell you the extraction method or the concentration of any active constituent, both of which vary substantially between suppliers.

Pregnancy

Albizia has traditional medicinal uses and limited safety data in pregnancy for topical application. Worth confirming with your doctor.
