Micrococcus lysate is a preparation derived from Micrococcus luteus, a soil bacterium. It belongs to a small and genuinely distinct category of cosmetic ingredients: DNA repair enzymes.

Why bacteria

Bacteria are exposed to UV and have evolved efficient machinery for repairing the damage it causes to DNA. That machinery can be extracted and used.

The enzyme of interest here is UV endonuclease, which recognises a specific form of UV-induced DNA damage and initiates its repair.

The damage it addresses

UVB radiation causes adjacent thymine bases in a DNA strand to bond to each other, forming what are called cyclobutane pyrimidine dimers. These distort the DNA helix and interfere with replication.

Human cells have their own repair mechanisms for this, principally nucleotide excision repair. Those mechanisms are efficient but not perfect, and their capacity declines with age and is overwhelmed by heavy exposure. Accumulated unrepaired damage is central to both photoageing and skin cancer.

UV endonuclease cuts the DNA strand at the damaged site, which allows the cell's own repair enzymes to complete the process.

Why this is a different category

Antioxidants intercept free radicals before they cause damage. Sunscreen blocks UV before it enters. DNA repair enzymes act after damage has occurred.

That is a genuinely distinct mechanism, and it explains why formulations increasingly combine all three.

The delivery question

Enzymes are proteins, and large ones. The stratum corneum is structured specifically to exclude molecules of that size, and the target is inside the cell nucleus, which is further still.

Formulations address this by encapsulating enzymes in liposomes designed to fuse with cell membranes. Studies using liposomal delivery have reported reduced measurable DNA damage after UV exposure, some of it in people with xeroderma pigmentosum, a genetic condition where repair capacity is absent.

That research is real and reasonably interesting. Whether the enzymes in any given cosmetic product are delivered effectively depends entirely on formulation, and the ingredient list will not tell you.

Related ingredients

Photolyase, usually listed as plankton extract and derived from algae or bacteria, is the other common DNA repair enzyme. It works on the same lesions by a different mechanism, using visible light energy to reverse the bond directly. Arabidopsis thaliana extract is a third, from a plant source.

Products aiming at DNA repair frequently include several, since they act on different lesions or by different routes.

The honest position

The biology is well established. The clinical research is more limited than for antioxidants or retinoids, largely industry-generated, and heavily dependent on delivery.

Worth saying plainly: none of this substitutes for sun protection. Preventing damage remains considerably more reliable than repairing it.
