Antioxidants as prevention rather than correction
This serum is built for the morning, and the logic is straightforward. UV, visible light, infrared and airborne pollution all generate free radicals through the day. Antioxidants intercept those before they cause damage.
That makes this a preventive product rather than a corrective one. It works alongside sunscreen rather than instead of it: SPF blocks UV before it enters, antioxidants deal with what gets through.
The encapsulated vitamins
Ascorbic acid, tocopheryl acetate and retinyl palmitate, marketed by ZO as ZOX12. Encapsulation is a delivery approach, protecting the vitamins from oxidation in the bottle and releasing them gradually rather than all at once.
The three work as a network. Vitamin C operates in the water phase, vitamin E in the lipid phase, and each can regenerate the other after oxidation. Vitamin A rounds out a complex covering different compartments.
A note on the retinyl palmitate. It sits at position twenty and is present here as an antioxidant rather than as an active retinoid. Nonetheless it is a vitamin A ester, and if you are avoiding retinoids for any reason you should know it is in the formula.
The polysaccharide complex
Galactoarabinan from larch, schizophyllan from fungus, pullulan from fermentation, and sclerotium gum, marketed together as ZPOLY. Beta-glucan and polyglutamic acid work alongside them.
These are large, water-holding molecules that form a light film at the surface. Pullulan is worth singling out: it forms an unusually strong, flexible film and produces a temporary tightening effect that some people notice on application.
Squalane adds a lipid component that reduces water loss.
The botanical antioxidants
Leontopodium alpinum, edelweiss, and marrubium vulgare, white horehound, as plant cell cultures. ZO call this pairing RRS2. Both contain measurable antioxidant compounds. The stem cell framing carries more weight in marketing than in evidence.
Laminaria digitata is kelp, opuntia ficus-indica is prickly pear, both used for hydration and antioxidant content.
Micrococcus lysate and arabidopsis thaliana
These two are more interesting than most botanical inclusions. Both are studied for enzymes involved in DNA repair, specifically photolyase and endonuclease, which act on UV-induced damage.
That is a genuinely different proposition from antioxidant activity. Whether these enzymes remain intact and reach the cells where they would act is the usual unresolved question, but the underlying research is real.
The soft-focus finish
Mica, titanium dioxide, iron oxides, tin oxide, silica and polymethyl methacrylate are light-diffusing particles. They scatter light rather than reflecting it directly, softening the appearance of texture and giving the subtle luminosity the product is named for.
This part is immediate and washes off. It is optical rather than corrective, and worth understanding as separate from what the antioxidants do over time.
