How it works

The occlusive layer, which is the point of this product

Petrolatum sits third in the ingredient list, and that is deliberate rather than incidental.

Moisturisers work through three mechanisms. Humectants draw water in. Emollients smooth the surface. Occlusives form a barrier that slows evaporation. Petrolatum is the most effective occlusive available, reducing transepidermal water loss by up to 99 percent, which no other single ingredient approaches.

That effectiveness comes with a texture. This is a heavy, greasy cream by design. If you want something light, this is not it, and that is not a fault.

Shea butter, isopropyl palmitate and cyclopentasiloxane add to the emollient layer, softening the feel and improving spreadability.

Colloidal oatmeal

Worth distinguishing from the oat extracts that appear in other products. Colloidal oatmeal is finely milled whole oat rather than a solvent extraction, so it retains the full profile: avenanthramides, which are polyphenols largely unique to oats, beta-glucan, saponins, lipids and proteins.

It works both physically, forming a protective film, and biologically, with avenanthramides studied for effects on inflammatory signalling and on the itch response.

In the United States, colloidal oatmeal is a recognised skin protectant with a defined regulatory monograph, which is unusual for a botanical.

Ophiopogon japonicus root extract

Mondo grass, used in traditional Chinese medicine. Studied for effects on barrier function and on the skin's own antimicrobial defences. Contains polysaccharides and saponins.

The humectants and soothing agents

Glycerin is second in the list, which is high. It is the most studied humectant there is and works particularly well beneath an occlusive, since the occlusive prevents the water it holds from evaporating.

Beta-glucan holds water and calms. Dipotassium glycyrrhizate is a licorice derivative with well-documented anti-inflammatory activity.

The peptides

Tetrapeptide-21 and myristoyl pentapeptide-11. Both are studied for effects on matrix proteins, though at their position in the list their contribution is modest relative to the occlusive and soothing ingredients.

The antioxidant complex

Tocopheryl acetate, retinyl palmitate and ascorbic acid, which ZO group as ZOX12.

Worth noting the retinyl palmitate. It sits at position twelve as part of an antioxidant complex rather than as an active retinoid. Nonetheless it is a vitamin A ester, and if you are avoiding retinoids you should know it is there.

On benzalkonium chloride

Present as a preservative. It is an effective antimicrobial and also a recognised irritant at higher concentrations, which is worth knowing in a product aimed at compromised skin, though it is used here at preservative levels.

Who it suits

Very dry, tight or flaking skin, and skin whose barrier is compromised for any reason. Suitable for face and body.

Particularly useful alongside retinoids or acids, where barrier disruption is expected. This is the kind of product that makes a difficult active tolerable.

Not the right product if you prefer a light texture or if your skin is oily and congestion-prone. Petrolatum at this level is genuinely occlusive and will feel like it.

Consider carefully if you are avoiding retinoids entirely.

If you have diagnosed eczema or dermatitis, that is a medical condition worth discussing with your doctor rather than managing through a skincare product alone.

How to use

Apply to clean, dry skin, morning or evening, or as often as needed.

Use as the final step in your routine. An occlusive works by sealing what is beneath it, so anything applied on top will struggle to get through.

Applying to slightly damp skin works better. The occlusive layer traps the water that is already there, which is more effective than applying to fully dry skin.

A small amount goes a long way. This is a rich formula and over-applying makes it feel heavier without improving the effect.

Layering

Use alongside

Retinoids and exfoliating acids, applied first and allowed to absorb. Following with an occlusive is one of the most effective ways to manage the irritation those cause.

Serums and treatments, all applied before this.

Order

Last. Always. Nothing goes over an occlusive.

Buffering

Applying this before a retinoid, rather than after, reduces how much of the active reaches the skin. That is sometimes exactly what you want when you are adjusting to a strong retinoid, but it is a deliberate choice rather than the default.
