Daily Power Defense

Sale price$284.00

An antioxidant and barrier serum with DNA repair enzymes, a vitamin A ester and a polysaccharide hydration complex.

When to use Morning and/or evening, after cleansing
How it works

Built for the evening, but also a light daily option.

ZO position this alongside Illuminating AOX Serum as a foundational pair, and the two can be used interchangeably. Comparing the ingredient lists is still instructive.

This one contains no vitamin C and no light-diffusing minerals, which is why it is often used in the evening. It carries more vitamin A instead, at position fourteen rather than twenty.

This one contains no vitamin C and no light-diffusing minerals. Both make sense: vitamin C earns its place during daytime UV exposure, and a soft-focus finish serves no purpose overnight. It carries more vitamin A instead, at position fourteen rather than twenty.

The DNA repair enzymes

Micrococcus lysate and arabidopsis thaliana extract are the most interesting ingredients here, and they belong to a small and genuinely distinct category.

UVB radiation causes adjacent bases in a DNA strand to bond together, forming lesions that interfere with replication. Human cells repair these, but the process is imperfect and its capacity declines with age.

Micrococcus lysate provides UV endonuclease, an enzyme from bacteria that recognises those lesions and initiates repair. Arabidopsis thaliana extract is a plant-derived source of related enzyme activity.

That is a different proposition from antioxidants. Antioxidants intercept free radicals before damage occurs. Repair enzymes act afterwards. It is also why an evening product is a sensible place for them: repair processes are most active during sleep.

The delivery question applies as it does to all large molecules. Enzymes are proteins, the barrier excludes proteins, and the target is inside the cell nucleus. Formulations address this with liposomal carriers, and the research is real but heavily dependent on how well it is done.

The vitamin A and E

Retinyl palmitate, tocopheryl acetate and tocopherol, ZO's ZOX12 complex without the vitamin C.

Retinyl palmitate is the mildest of the retinoids, requiring three enzymatic conversions before reaching retinoic acid. Its position here is higher than in most of the range, so it is contributing more than purely as a stabiliser, though this remains a gentle vitamin A product rather than a retinol treatment.

Tocopherol and tocopheryl acetate provide antioxidant activity in the lipid phase.

The barrier lipids

Safflower oil/palm oil aminopropanediol esters sit at position eight. These are pseudoceramides, synthetic lipids designed to mimic the structure and function of the skin's own ceramides. Rather than supplying ceramides directly, they provide an analogous molecule that integrates into the barrier structure.

Lecithin contributes phospholipids.

The hydration complex

Galactoarabinan from larch, schizophyllan from fungus, beta-glucan, and cellulose. ZO group these as ZPOLY. Large water-holding molecules that form a light film at the surface.

Laminaria digitata is kelp, opuntia ficus-indica is prickly pear, both adding hydration and antioxidant content.

The botanical antioxidants

Marrubium vulgare and leontopodium alpinum, white horehound and edelweiss, as plant cell cultures. ZO call this RRS2. Both contain measurable antioxidant compounds. The stem cell framing carries more weight in marketing than in evidence.

Two things to know

This product contains lactose and is therefore not vegan. Lactose intolerance is a digestive matter and does not apply to topical use, but a milk allergy is a different question.

The product is fragranced, with limonene declared as a recognised contact allergen.

Who it suits

Most skin types, as an evening barrier and antioxidant layer. It contains no acids, no alcohol and no high-strength retinoid, which makes it one of the more universally tolerable products in the range.

ZO position it as a foundational product rather than a targeted treatment, used alongside whatever else your routine requires.

Consider carefully if you are avoiding retinoids entirely, if you avoid animal-derived ingredients, or if you have reacted to fragranced products before.

How to use

Apply to clean, dry skin. ZO's guidance permits morning and evening use, and many people use it twice daily.

The most common approach is Illuminating AOX Serum in the morning and this in the evening, since AOX carries vitamin C and a soft-focus finish that suit daytime. But the two are interchangeable, and this can be used at both ends of the day if you prefer.

If using in the morning, follow with sunscreen. Retinyl palmitate is a vitamin A ester and increases UV sensitivity, though considerably less than retinol does.

Layering

Use alongside

A moisturiser afterwards. This is a serum, not a moisturiser.

Illuminating AOX Serum in the morning, as the pair ZO designed them to be, or use the Daily Power Defense twice daily.

Keep in mind

If you use a retinol treatment in the evening, consider whether you want both on the same night. Neither is likely to cause a problem, but layering vitamin A sources is worth doing deliberately rather than by accident.

Order

After cleansing and any treatment serum, before moisturiser.

Before you start

Not suitable if

  • Milk allergy
  • Known fragrance sensitivity
  • Broken or compromised skin

Good to know

  • Patch test on a small area of skin before first full use
  • Increases skin sensitivity to UV. Use broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher daily
  • Speak to your doctor before use during pregnancy
