Spin Trap (PBN)

A nitrone compound originally developed for laboratory research, where it is used to capture and stabilise free radicals so they can be studied — hence the nickname ‘spin trap’.

How it works

Conventional antioxidants neutralise radicals by sacrificing themselves. A spin trap instead binds the radical into a stable complex, taking it out of circulation. Research associates PBN with protection against oxidative stress in skin models, and its unusual mechanism is why it appears alongside — rather than instead of — classic antioxidants.

Tolerability

Well tolerated at cosmetic levels, with no photosensitising effect.

Pregnancy and breastfeeding

No established concerns at topical cosmetic levels; conventionally considered suitable.
