Zinc oxide is the broadest-spectrum single sunscreen filter available — a white mineral that covers UVB and the full UVA range, including the long UVA wavelengths many organic filters miss. It is the default recommendation for reactive skin, children, and skin recovering from procedures, and the backbone of most “mineral” sunscreens.
How it actually works
The persistent story is that mineral filters physically reflect UV like tiny mirrors while chemical filters absorb it. Modern measurement says otherwise: zinc oxide absorbs the overwhelming majority of the UV it stops — well over ninety percent — converting it to trivial warmth, and scatters only a small remainder. The real differences from organic filters lie elsewhere: zinc oxide is highly photostable (it does not degrade in sunlight), it sits on the surface rather than interacting with skin chemistry, and sensitisation to it is essentially unreported — which is why dermatology leans on it wherever skin is fragile.
The white-cast trade-off
The same particles that protect also whiten, especially at the generous percentages good protection requires. Formulators answer with micronised grades and with iron-oxide tints that cancel the cast — and tinted versions carry a quiet bonus: iron oxides screen part of visible light itself, which research links to pigment provocation in melasma-prone skin. For pigment patients, a tinted mineral sunscreen is functionally a treatment accessory.

Percentages above twenty percent signal a serious mineral formula. Zinc oxide is non-comedogenic in modern dispersions, unfragranced by nature, and compatible with every active in a routine. Its long history includes calamine lotion and nappy-rash paste — the same mineral, the same mildness.
