A two-ester approach to vitamin A

Retinyl acetate, unusually high on this label, and retinol both convert toward retinoic acid, the form retinoid receptors respond to, at different rates. Research associates receptor activity with epidermal turnover and fibroblast activity: the fine-line and texture work retinoids are known for.

Hydration built into the vehicle

Witch hazel water, squalane, hyaluronic acid, sodium PCA and a botanical polysaccharide carry the retinoids in a base designed to offset their early dryness, with proline and hydroxyproline, the amino acids collagen is built from, riding along.

Retinisation

The standard adjustment period applies: two to four weeks of possible dryness and flaking. Introduce on two to three nights a week and build.

Non-negotiable

Evenings only, and daily broad-spectrum SPF, retinoid-treated skin is more UV-sensitive.

Skin working on texture, fine lines and tone that wants a dedicated retinoid with the comfort engineering already done, a natural first or second retinoid.

Not suitable

During pregnancy or while breastfeeding, in line with standard retinoid guidance.

Worth knowing

Contains lavender and rosewood oils with four declared fragrance allergens; fragrance-reactive skin should patch test.

Evenings only. A pea-sized amount on clean, dry skin, two to three nights a week, building to nightly as tolerated.

Follow with moisturiser. SPF every morning.

Use alongside

A gentle cleanse and a plain moisturiser; Benefit Clean is the natural base. Morning antioxidants complement from the other end of the day.

Keep apart from

Define, exfoliating acids, Pure Enzymes and Purity Clean on the same night, one resurfacing source per evening.
