Eye Brightening Crème

Dark circles are not one problem. They arise from vascular congestion, from pigment, from thin skin allowing what sits beneath to show through, or from some combination. This formula addresses several at once, and the three mechanisms work on different timescales.

Immediate: optical correction

Titanium dioxide, iron oxides, boron nitride and silica are light-diffusing particles. Boron nitride and silica scatter light, softening the appearance of fine lines and shadow. The red iron oxide is doing colour theory: red counteracts the blue-violet cast that vascular shadowing produces.

This effect is visible on application and comes off when you cleanse. It is cosmetic rather than corrective, and worth understanding as such.

Weeks: circulation

Caffeine is a vasoconstrictor, narrowing blood vessels temporarily and reducing the appearance of both puffiness and blue-toned shadowing. Arnica montana has long traditional use with bruising and vascular congestion.

Saccharomyces lysate extract, carnitine and coenzyme A are included for their role in cellular energy and microcirculation. Coenzyme A is central to fatty acid metabolism, carnitine transports fatty acids into mitochondria.

Months: pigment and structure

Kojic dipalmitate is an oil-soluble ester of kojic acid, a tyrosinase inhibitor. Tyrosinase initiates melanin synthesis, so this route addresses genuine pigmentation rather than shadow.

Retinol converts in skin to retinoic acid, influencing cell turnover and fibroblast activity in the dermis. In an eye product this is aimed at the thinness of the under-eye skin, which is a structural contributor to darkness.

The base

Shea butter is the second ingredient, with squalane, phospholipids and sodium hyaluronate. This is a rich, emollient formula, which suits an area with few oil glands and matters more than usual when the formula contains a retinoid.

Two things worth knowing

Hydrolyzed sericin is a silk protein, derived from silkworms, so this product is not vegan.

Glycine soja seed extract is soy. Relevant if you have a soy allergy or choose to avoid phytoestrogens.

The eye area where several concerns overlap: shadowing, puffiness, and fine lines. The tint suits most skin tones but is worth patch-testing on very fair or very deep skin.

Not suitable during pregnancy or breastfeeding, since it contains retinol.

Consider carefully if you have never used a retinoid near the eye, if you have a soy allergy, or if you avoid animal-derived ingredients.

Use morning and evening. Pat gently under the eye and along the orbital bone until absorbed. Do not apply to the eyelid or into the lash line.

A small amount is enough. This is a 15 mL product intended to last.

If you are new to retinol near the eye, start every second or third evening and build up. The skin here is thinner than on the face and adjusts more slowly.

Follow with broad-spectrum SPF in the morning. Retinol increases UV sensitivity, and the eye area is frequently missed.
