How it works

Retinol at 0.5%, encapsulated

Retinol is a vitamin A derivative. Skin enzymes convert it in two steps to retinoic acid, the form that binds retinoid receptors in the epidermis and dermis.

The retinol here is encapsulated, a formulation approach rather than a different molecule. Encapsulation protects it from oxidation in the jar and releases it more gradually on the skin, which generally improves tolerance at a given concentration.

At 0.5% this is the middle of three strengths. Worth noting that the ingredient list confirms it: retinol appears substantially earlier here than in the 0.25% version, and INCI lists run in order of decreasing concentration.

Bakuchiol alongside it

Bakuchiol is a plant compound from Psoralea corylifolia, usually marketed as a retinol alternative. Using both together is less contradictory than it sounds. Bakuchiol appears to act on some of the same gene pathways as retinoids without binding retinoid receptors directly, so the two are complementary rather than duplicative.

The brightening complex

Four ingredients addressing uneven tone by different routes.

Ascorbyl glucoside and ascorbyl palmitate are stable vitamin C derivatives, one water-soluble and one oil-soluble, converted to ascorbic acid in the skin. Vitamin C interacts with tyrosinase, the enzyme central to melanin production.

Glutathione is a tripeptide antioxidant produced naturally in the body, studied for its effect on the melanin pathway.

Acetyl glucosamine is an amino sugar and a precursor to hyaluronic acid, also studied for its effect on melanin production.

Soy isoflavones are plant compounds with weak affinity for oestrogen receptors, included for their researched effects on tone and firmness.

Gluconolactone

A polyhydroxy acid, related to the alpha hydroxy acids but with a larger molecule and additional hydroxyl groups. It exfoliates more gently than glycolic or lactic acid while holding water, which suits a formula already carrying a retinoid.

The supporting formula

Sweet almond and apricot kernel oils, lecithin and dimethicone form the emollient base. Bisabolol is included for its calming properties. Tocopheryl acetate, BHT and the sulfites protect the formula itself from oxidation, which matters with retinol and vitamin C together.

Fragrance, essential oils and other flags

Six recognised contact allergens are declared on the pack: linalool, citronellol, geraniol, limonene, citral and coumarin. Lavender and geranium flower oils are present as essential oils.

The formula also contains sweet almond oil, sodium sulfite and sodium metabisulfite, and soy isoflavones. Relevant if you have a nut allergy, sulfite sensitivity, or choose to avoid phytoestrogens.

Who it suits

Skin concerned with uneven tone, visible discoloration and surface roughness, where a retinoid is already tolerated. ZO position this strength for regular retinol users.

If you are new to retinol, the 0.25% is the sensible starting point. Beginning at 0.5% is possible but more likely to produce a difficult adjustment period.

Not suitable during pregnancy or breastfeeding. The pack states this directly.

Consider carefully if you have a nut allergy, sulfite sensitivity, asthma, or have reacted to fragranced products or essential oils.

How to use

Apply to clean, dry skin. Do not use on damaged or broken skin.

Build up gradually. Twice a week to begin with, moving to alternate evenings, then daily only if comfortably tolerated. Mild dryness or flaking in the first two to four weeks is a common adjustment response.

Evening use is the conventional approach with retinoids, since retinol degrades on UV exposure and skin using it is more UV-sensitive.

Stop use and consult a doctor if a rash or persistent irritation develops.

Always follow with broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher the next morning.

Layering

Keep apart

Other retinoids, including prescription tretinoin, retinal and other retinol products. Doubling up increases irritation without increasing benefit.

Exfoliating acids on the same evening. This formula already contains gluconolactone.

Use alongside

A moisturiser afterwards, or beforehand as a buffer if you are sensitive.

Daily broad-spectrum SPF, which is not optional with a retinoid.

Before you start

Not suitable if

  • You are pregnant
  • Broken or damaged skin
  • Concurrent use of other retinoids
  • Nut allergy
  • Sulfite sensitivity
  • Known fragrance or essential oil allergy
  • Recent professional peel or resurfacing

Good to know

  • Patch test on a small area of skin before first full use
  • Increases skin sensitivity to UV. Use broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher daily
