A high-potency 0.5% retinol lotion in a microemulsion delivery system, with a biomimetic tetrapeptide and antioxidant support. Not for individuals new to retinol.

When to use Evening, after cleansing
How it works

0.5% retinol, delivered differently

Retinol converts in the skin through two enzymatic steps to retinoic acid, the form that binds retinoid receptors in the epidermis and dermis.

The concentration here is the same as ZO's Retinol Skin Brightener 0.5%, but the delivery differs. This uses a microemulsion, a system of very small, stable droplets that improves how the retinol disperses and penetrates. That is why ZO position this as the higher-potency of the two and recommend it for deeper lines.

Same percentage does not mean same effect. Delivery matters as much as concentration.

Be prepared for the adjustment period

ZO are unusually direct about this, and it is worth repeating rather than softening. Their own guidance states that redness, dryness, flaking, burning and stinging are anticipated in the first few weeks.

This is retinisation, the period during which skin adjusts to a retinoid. It is expected rather than a sign something has gone wrong, and it subsides with consistent use. But it is real, and this is a product where people commonly go too fast and stop altogether.

The peptide complex

Caprooyl tetrapeptide-3 and melilotus officinalis, sweet yellow clover, which ZO market as ZCORE. The peptide is studied for its effect on anchoring fibrils at the dermal-epidermal junction, the structural interface between the two skin layers that flattens with age.

The antioxidant and protective layer

Ascorbyl palmitate is an oil-soluble vitamin C derivative. Tocopheryl acetate is a vitamin E ester. BHT, the sulfites and pentaerythrityl tetra-di-t-butyl hydroxyhydrocinnamate all protect the formula itself from oxidation, which matters a great deal in a retinol product.

The anti-irritant additions

Sunflower seed oil provides linoleic acid, a barrier lipid, and is included for its anti-irritant properties. Bisabolol, from chamomile, is a well-documented soothing agent. Beta-glucan, dextran and hydrolysed sericin hold water at the surface.

Ethyl nicotinate is a nicotinic acid ester and a vasodilator. It may contribute a transient warming sensation.

Formulated at pH 5.5

Close to skin's natural pH, which is deliberate. Retinol does not require an acidic environment to work, unlike hydroxy acids, so formulating near neutral reduces one source of irritation in a product that already causes plenty.

Fragrance, essential oils and other flags

Six recognised contact allergens are declared: linalool, citronellol, geraniol, citral, limonene and coumarin's relatives. Lavender and geranium flower oils are present as essential oils.

The formula contains sodium sulfite and sodium metabisulfite, relevant to sulfite sensitivity, and hydrolysed sericin, a silk protein, so it is not vegan.

Who it suits

Skin concerned with established lines, wrinkles and texture, where a retinoid is already tolerated.

Not for anyone new to retinol. ZO's own guidance is that this is high-potency and requires gradual introduction. If you have not used a retinoid before, the Retinol Skin Brightener 0.25% is the sensible starting point.

Not suitable during pregnancy or breastfeeding. The pack states this directly.

Consider carefully if you have a sulfite sensitivity, asthma, avoid animal-derived ingredients, or have reacted to fragranced products or essential oils.

How to use

Apply a pea-sized amount to clean, dry skin. Face, neck and décolletage. Avoid the eye area. Do not use on damaged or broken skin.

The build-up schedule matters more here than with any other product in the range. ZO's guidance: twice weekly to begin, then alternate evenings, then daily only if comfortably tolerated.

Going faster does not produce faster results. It produces a barrier so disrupted you stop using the product, which is the most common way people fail with retinol.

Buffering helps. Applying moisturiser first, or immediately after, reduces irritation while your skin adjusts. ZO recommend pairing with a hydrator for exactly this reason.

Evening use. Retinol degrades on UV exposure and skin using it is more UV-sensitive.

Always follow with broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher the next morning.

Layering

Keep apart

Other retinoids, including prescription tretinoin and other retinol products. Two retinoids is not twice the benefit, it is twice the irritation.

Exfoliating acids on the same evening. Alternate nights, and only once your skin is settled with each individually.

Vitamin C serums in the same application, where the combination may sting on adjusting skin.

Use alongside

A barrier-supporting moisturiser, before or after. This is the single most useful thing you can do to make a high-strength retinoid tolerable.

Daily broad-spectrum SPF, without exception.
