Soothing agent (Humectant)

Aloe Vera

INCI name Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Juice
Function Soothing agent (Humectant)
Pregnancy Suitable
UV sensitivity Not photosensitising

The inner-leaf juice of the aloe plant — one of the oldest and most-studied soothing ingredients in skincare.

How it works

Aloe is largely water structured by polysaccharides, notably acemannan, alongside amino acids and minerals. Research associates it with soothing and hydrating activity: the polysaccharides hold water at the skin surface and are associated with calmed, more comfortable skin after sun, shaving or dryness.

Tolerability

Very well tolerated across skin types; genuine aloe allergy is rare but possible.

Pregnancy and breastfeeding

No concerns are associated with topical use; conventionally considered suitable.
