TriHex Technology is Alastin's patented peptide platform and the basis of the brand. Its proposition differs from how most anti-ageing ingredients describe themselves, and the difference is worth understanding.

Clearing before building

Most peptides and retinoids aim to stimulate production of new collagen and elastin. TriHex proposes an additional step first.

With age and UV exposure, collagen and elastin fibres become fragmented. Damaged elastin in particular accumulates as disorganised material in sun-exposed skin, a change dermatologists call solar elastosis. The proposition is that this accumulated debris occupies the space where new fibres would form, and that clearing it produces a better environment for renewal.

Alastin describe this as preparing the extracellular matrix. Their published work associates the peptides with increased expression of matrix metalloproteinases, the enzymes that break down damaged matrix proteins, alongside increased production of new collagen and elastin.

A nuance worth noting

Matrix metalloproteinases are usually discussed as the villains of skin ageing. UV exposure upregulates them, they degrade collagen, and many anti-ageing ingredients aim to inhibit them.

TriHex proposes the opposite in a specific context: that controlled MMP activity is part of normal tissue turnover, and that the problem is not the enzymes themselves but chronic uncontrolled activity. Clearing damaged protein is a step toward replacing it.

That is a defensible argument and a genuine point of difference. It also means the technology sits somewhat against the grain of how the category usually talks, which is worth being aware of when comparing products.

The two peptides

Hexapeptide-11 is a six amino acid chain, originally identified through yeast screening and studied for effects on cellular senescence and on matrix protein expression.

Acetyl tetrapeptide-2 is a four amino acid chain studied for effects on elastin and on the thymic peptides involved in tissue renewal.

They are used together, and Alastin's research is on the combination.

The evidence, stated fairly

Alastin hold a US patent on the technology and have published multiple studies, including work using biopsy and histological assessment rather than appearance alone. That is a higher standard of evidence than most cosmetic peptide claims rest on.

The important caveat is that the research is almost entirely company-funded and independent replication is limited. This is normal for proprietary cosmetic technology rather than a mark against it, but it is worth knowing.

The delivery question applies as it does to all peptides. Both are water-soluble and small, which helps.

Where it appears

Across Alastin's range, in face, neck, eye and body formulations. It is frequently used before and after aesthetic procedures, on the reasoning that clearing damaged matrix supports recovery, and this is where much of the clinical interest sits.
