Sodium ascorbate, and why the form matters
Vitamin C is the most studied antioxidant in skincare and the most difficult to formulate. Pure ascorbic acid oxidises readily in water, turning yellow then brown as it degrades, and it requires a low pH to penetrate, which some skin finds irritating.
Sodium ascorbate is the sodium salt of ascorbic acid. It is stable at near-neutral pH rather than needing an acidic formulation, and it is considerably gentler as a result.
The trade-off is directness. The salt must dissociate and convert to ascorbic acid in the skin, and that conversion is not complete, so the delivered dose of active vitamin C is lower than the applied concentration. Comparing a sodium ascorbate percentage to an ascorbic acid percentage is not like for like.
This is a different answer to the same problem than an anhydrous formulation gives. Removing water prevents oxidation entirely but produces an occlusive silicone texture. Using a salt keeps the formula water-based and comfortable at the cost of some potency.
The antioxidant network
This is not a vitamin C serum with supporting ingredients. It is a network formula, and the logic is worth understanding.
Antioxidants work in different compartments and regenerate one another. Vitamin C operates in the water phase. Ubiquinone, coenzyme Q10, sits within cell membranes. Tocopherol and tocopheryl acetate work in the lipid phase. After each donates an electron and is oxidised, the others can return it to its active form.
Formulating several together is more than the sum of the parts, and this formula does it deliberately.
Ergothioneine
A sulfur-containing amino acid derivative produced by fungi, and one of the more interesting recent additions to cosmetic formulation.
Humans cannot make it, yet the body has a dedicated transporter protein for it, which suggests a specific biological role. It accumulates in tissues under high oxidative stress, including skin, and it is unusually stable compared to vitamin C or green tea catechins.
Carnosine
A dipeptide of beta-alanine and histidine, found naturally in muscle and brain tissue. Its distinctive property is anti-glycation activity: interfering with the reaction in which sugars bind to proteins and form cross-links that stiffen collagen and elastin.
That is a different mechanism from free radical scavenging, and it addresses a different route of ageing.
The botanical polyphenols
Green tea leaf extract contains catechins, principally EGCG, among the most studied plant antioxidants. Olive leaf extract contains oleuropein. Pomegranate fruit extract contains ellagitannins and punicalagins. Ginger root contains gingerols with documented anti-inflammatory activity.
Physalis angulata is a member of the nightshade family, used for antioxidant and calming properties. Dunaliella salina is a carotenoid-rich microalga.
Ectoin
A molecule produced by microorganisms living in extreme environments, where it protects cells against salt, heat and dehydration. It works by organising water into a stabilised shell around proteins and membranes rather than binding water directly, which helps those structures hold their form under stress.
Soothing and hydration
Bisabolol, the principal active constituent of chamomile, has documented anti-inflammatory activity. Centella asiatica is among the best-evidenced botanicals in topical use, studied for effects on collagen synthesis and wound healing.
Tremella fuciformis, betaine and mannitol hold water. Squalane and phosphatidylcholine supply lipids.
Lactoferrin
A milk-derived protein with iron-binding and antimicrobial properties. Its presence means this product is not vegan, and it is relevant if you have a milk allergy.
What is not in it
No fragrance, no essential oils, no declared allergens, no alcohol, no acids and no retinoid.
