Retinal: one step closer

Skin must convert any over-the-counter vitamin A to retinoic acid before it works. Retinol needs two conversion steps; retinaldehyde needs one, which is why research associates retinal with visibly faster results at equal tolerance. At 0.01%, this is the gentlest dose in the ladder: a genuine retinoid sized for a first-timer.

The crystal in the name

Retinaldehyde is notoriously unstable, light and air destroy it. Here each molecule is caged in cyclodextrin, a sugar lattice that shields it in the bottle and releases it gradually through the night, flattening the irritation spike that gave retinoids their fearsome reputation.

The support crew

Squalane, hyaluronic acid and glycerin cushion; two vitamin C esters ride along as stabilisers and daytime-defence partners; carrot seed and cloudberry oils bring the vitamin-A-adjacent botanicals. The soft scent is vanilla and tonka, with coumarin declared, noted below.

The ladder logic

Crystal Retinal is designed as a progression: start at 1, and when skin shrugs at it, typically after a bottle or two, step up. Strength is earned, not chosen.

Retinoid first-timers, sensitive skin that has failed retinol before, and anyone starting the vitamin-A half of the CSA routine: C by day, sunscreen always, A by night.

Worth knowing

Not for use during pregnancy or breastfeeding, this applies to every retinoid. Expect possible mild dryness or flaking in the first weeks; it settles. Contains vanilla and tonka extracts with coumarin declared, patch test with a fragrance allergy. Prescription-strength conversations belong with our clinicians.

Evenings on clean, dry skin: a pea-sized amount over face, avoiding eyes and lips. Start two to three nights a week, building to nightly as tolerated. Moisturiser after if skin runs dry.

High SPF every morning, without exception, retinoids and sun protection are a package deal.
