Pigmentation forms through several stages, and this formula addresses more than one of them.
Tranexamic acid
The most interesting ingredient here. Tranexamic acid is a synthetic derivative of the amino acid lysine, developed as a medicine to reduce bleeding by interfering with plasminogen activation.
Its use in pigmentation came from an unexpected observation: patients taking it orally for other reasons showed lightening of melasma. The proposed mechanism connects to the same plasminogen pathway. UV exposure triggers plasmin activity in keratinocytes, which contributes to melanocyte stimulation. Tranexamic acid interrupts that signal.
This matters because it works upstream of melanin production, rather than inhibiting the enzyme that makes it. That is a genuinely different route from vitamin C, kojic acid or arbutin.
Niacinamide
At position four, which is high. Niacinamide interferes with the transfer of melanin from melanocytes to surrounding keratinocytes. Pigment is still produced, but less reaches the visible surface.
It also supports barrier lipid production, which is why it appears in formulas alongside more disruptive actives.
Aminopropyl ascorbyl phosphate
A stable vitamin C derivative, converted to ascorbic acid in the skin. Vitamin C interacts with tyrosinase, the enzyme that initiates melanin synthesis. A fourth route, alongside the three above.
Enzymatic and acid exfoliation
Papain is a proteolytic enzyme from papaya. It breaks down proteins holding dead cells at the surface, which lifts pigment already present. Enzymatic exfoliation is generally gentler than acid exfoliation and does not depend on low pH.
Lactic acid/glycolic acid copolymer is a polymer of the two acids, releasing them gradually rather than delivering them all at once.
The encapsulated peptides
Palmitoyl sh-octapeptide-24 amide and palmitoyl sh-tripeptide-5 norisoleucyl sh-nonapeptide-1 are the ingredients ZO market as their intelligent peptide drone. The sh- prefix denotes synthetic human, meaning sequences matching human proteins produced by fermentation, and encapsulation is a delivery approach.
As with all peptides, the open question is how much reaches the depth where it would act.
The soothing layer
Dipotassium glycyrrhizate is a licorice derivative with well-documented anti-inflammatory activity. Beta-glucan holds water and calms. Diglucosyl gallic acid is a stabilised derivative of gallic acid, an antioxidant. Bidens pilosa is a botanical extract with reported effects on skin tone.
On "non-retinol"
ZO describe this product as non-retinol. That description is not quite accurate.
Retinyl palmitate appears at position 31. It is a vitamin A ester, the mildest of the retinoids, requiring three enzymatic conversions before reaching the active form. At that position in the list it is most plausibly present to protect the formula from oxidation rather than to act on skin.
Nonetheless, it is a retinoid. If you are avoiding retinoids for any reason, including pregnancy, you should know it is there.
Fragrance and other notes
This product is fragranced, though no individual allergens are declared. It contains sodium bisulfite, relevant to sulfite sensitivity, and cottonseed and palm oils.
