A serum for red and sensitised skin, combining a redness-relieving complex with enzymatic exfoliation and a polysaccharide hydration system.

When to use Morning and evening, after cleansing
How it works

The redness-relieving complex

Lactose, milk protein and broccoli extract, which ZO group together. Milk proteins have documented soothing properties in topical use, and broccoli extract contains sulforaphane, a compound studied for antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activity.

Farnesyl acetate and farnesol appear alongside them. Farnesol is a naturally occurring sesquiterpene alcohol with antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties. It is also a recognised fragrance allergen, which is worth knowing in a product aimed at reactive skin.

Palmitoyl glycine

Sixth in the list, which is high. This is an amino acid derivative, glycine with a palmitic acid chain attached to improve barrier compatibility.

It is studied for effects on sebum production and on the appearance of enlarged pores. Its position here suggests it is doing significant work rather than being a token inclusion.

Enzymatic exfoliation, deliberately mild

Carbomer/papain crosspolymer is papain bound into a polymer rather than free in solution. That slows its release and moderates its activity, which matters when the target is skin that reacts easily.

Papain is a protease, breaking down the proteins holding dead cells at the surface. Enzymatic exfoliation does not require the low pH that acids do, which makes it gentler on compromised skin. Lactic acid appears near the end of the list, contributing to pH rather than acting as an exfoliant.

The hydration complex

Galactoarabinan from larch, schizophyllan from fungus, algin and hydrolysed algin from seaweed. ZO market these as ZPOLY.

These are large water-holding molecules forming a light film at the surface. Laminaria digitata is kelp, opuntia ficus-indica is prickly pear, both adding to the hydration and antioxidant content.

Barrier and soothing support

Panthenol and panthenyl triacetate are both vitamin B5 derivatives, well studied for barrier support. Sunflower seed oil provides linoleic acid. Lecithin contributes phospholipids.

Leontopodium alpinum and marrubium vulgare, edelweiss and white horehound, appear as plant cell cultures. Both contain measurable antioxidant compounds. The stem cell framing carries more weight in marketing than in evidence.

Two things to know

This product contains milk protein and lactose. It is not vegan, and it is relevant if you have a milk allergy. Lactose intolerance is a digestive matter and does not apply to topical use.

The product is fragranced. Farnesol, present in the formula, is itself a recognised contact allergen.

Who it suits

Skin prone to visible redness, flushing and sensitivity, particularly where excess surface oil is also a concern. Suits normal to dry and sensitised skin.

The enzymatic exfoliation is deliberately mild, which makes it more approachable than an acid product for skin that reacts easily.

Consider carefully if you have a milk allergy, if you avoid animal-derived ingredients, or if you have reacted to fragrance or to farnesol specifically.

If you have diagnosed rosacea, that is a medical condition and worth discussing with your doctor rather than approaching through a skincare product alone. This serum is aimed at the appearance of redness, not at treating a condition.

How to use

Apply one to two pumps to clean, dry skin, morning and evening. Smooth across face and neck, focusing on areas of visible redness.

Follow with moisturiser and, in the morning, sunscreen.

On patch testing. For skin that is already reactive, patch testing matters more than usual. Test on a small area and wait a full day before applying to the face.

Cleanser choice matters here. A gentle, non-foaming cleanser is a better companion to this product than an exfoliating or sulfate-based one, particularly while your skin settles.

Layering

Use alongside

A gentle cleanser and a barrier-supporting moisturiser.

Daily broad-spectrum SPF. UV is among the most common triggers for visible flushing, so sun protection matters more than usual here.

Keep apart

Exfoliating acids and physical scrubs. This formula already exfoliates, gently, and reactive skin does not need more.

Retinoids, at least while your skin is settling. If you use both, introduce one at a time and consider alternating.

Anything with alcohol or strong fragrance elsewhere in the routine.
