Salicylic acid without the alcohol
Salicylic acid is a beta hydroxy acid and oil-soluble, which is why it can move into the sebum within a pore rather than working only on the surface.
That oil solubility creates a formulation problem: salicylic acid dissolves poorly in water, so most products carry it in alcohol or a strong solvent. That is why so many salicylic acid products are drying, and it is the reason the pads in this range are alcohol-led.
Here it is solubilised in propanediol and butylene glycol instead. Same molecule, different vehicle. ZO describe this as water-soluble salicylic acid, which is a formulation achievement rather than a different form of the acid.
The sebum-targeting botanicals
Three extracts appear high in the list: eugenia uniflora, a South American cherry, syringa vulgaris, lilac, and rosa canina, rosehip. ZO group these as their sebum-targeting complex, included for their effect on surface oil.
The plant cell cultures
Leontopodium alpinum is edelweiss, marrubium vulgare is white horehound, both present as meristem cell cultures. Plant stem cell ingredients carry a lot of marketing weight in the category and a modest evidence base. The extracts do contain measurable antioxidant compounds, edelweiss notably leontopodic acid, but the stem cell framing implies more than the research supports.
The polysaccharide layer
Galactoarabinan is derived from larch and forms a light film on the surface. Schizophyllan is a beta-glucan from fungus, studied for soothing and hydration. Acacia senegal gum and inulin lauryl carbamate contribute to the same function. Together they hold water and support the barrier while the acid works.
Two antioxidants worth naming
Ergothioneine is an amino acid derived from fungi, and one of the more interesting recent additions to cosmetic formulation. The body has a dedicated transporter protein for it, which is unusual and suggests a specific biological role. It is a potent scavenger of free radicals.
Phytic acid is a plant-derived compound with two functions: it chelates metal ions, which slows oxidation reactions in the skin, and it acts as a very mild exfoliant. It also interacts with tyrosinase, the enzyme central to melanin production.
What is not in it
No fragrance and no declared fragrance allergens. No denatured alcohol. Trisodium ethylenediamine disuccinate replaces EDTA as a biodegradable chelator.
It does contain sodium bisulfite, which is relevant if you have a sulfite sensitivity.
