Salicylic acid is a beta hydroxy acid, and the only widely used one. Its defining property is that it is oil-soluble, which sets it apart from every alpha hydroxy acid.
Why oil solubility matters
Alpha hydroxy acids such as glycolic and lactic are water-soluble, so they work on the skin surface. Salicylic acid partitions into sebum, meaning it can move into the lipid environment of a pore rather than sitting on top of it.
That is the entire reason it appears in products aimed at congestion and blackheads. It reaches where the problem is.
How it works
Salicylic acid is keratolytic. It disrupts the bonds holding corneocytes together, allowing the outer layer to shed more readily, and it does this within the follicular opening as well as on the surface.
It also has anti-inflammatory activity, which is unsurprising given it is structurally related to aspirin. Both derive from salicylate chemistry.
pH and concentration
Effectiveness depends on formulation as much as on percentage. Salicylic acid needs an acidic environment to remain in its active, un-ionised form. The same concentration at pH 3 and pH 5 will not behave the same way, and pH is almost never disclosed.
Contact time matters too. In a rinse-off cleanser, salicylic acid is on the skin for under a minute. In a leave-on serum, it stays for hours. Comparing percentages between the two formats is not meaningful.
Pregnancy
Low-concentration salicylic acid in rinse-off products is generally regarded as acceptable during pregnancy, in contrast to oral salicylates and high-strength chemical peels, which are avoided. Because guidance varies and the answer depends on concentration and format, this is worth confirming with your doctor.
Aspirin sensitivity
People with salicylate sensitivity or aspirin allergy should approach topical salicylic acid with caution and take medical advice first.
