Canadian Willowherb

INCI name Epilobium Angustifolium Flower/Leaf/Stem Extract
Function Soothing agent (Antioxidant)
Pregnancy Suitable
UV sensitivity Not photosensitising

Canadian Willowherb is an extract of Epilobium angustifolium (fireweed), a flowering plant native to North America. Its main characterised constituent is oenothein B, a polyphenol, alongside flavonoids with antioxidant activity.

How it works

Research associates oenothein B with antioxidant activity and with reduced markers of irritation in skin models. In cosmetic use the extract is applied to visibly calm redness and support skin that reacts easily to cleansing or active ingredients.

Where you will find it

Willowherb appears across the Aspect range as a signature soothing ingredient, typically alongside gentle cleansing agents or actives whose irritation it is included to offset.

Tolerability

The extract is generally well tolerated and is not photosensitising. As with any botanical extract, individual sensitivity is possible; skin with a known Epilobium allergy should avoid it.

Pregnancy and breastfeeding

No established concerns are associated with topical use, and it is conventionally considered suitable during pregnancy and breastfeeding.
